The early history of Williams-Brice Football Stadium : [1975 Apr.] ; [typescript] / by D.W. Robinson.

Historical essay (9 typescript sheets [1975]) and supporting documents (28 documents, 1934-1935), re history of location and construction of the Williams-Brice Football Stadium for use by the University of South Carolina; negotiations with the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina for use of the fairgrounds, and the eventual purchase of 20.17 acres of adjacent property on Bluff Road owned by Susan Ames Taylor. Robinson notes efforts to fund the project in the midst of the Great Depression, and correspondence and documents from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (an entity now known as the United States Small Business Administration); documenting alternative plans that would have placed the stadium closer to campus at Maxcy Gregg Park on Blossom St., and location of previous games: "prior to 1934 the football games of the University, with the exception of the Carolina-Clemson game, were played on Davis or [following W.D. Melton's term as President, what was later known as] Melton Field.... the old parade ground.... It ran along the southern side of Green Street from Sumter to Bull, except that the frontage on Bull Street was occupied by the Thompson Infirmary." During the 1920s, "the Carolina-Clemson game was played on the State Fair property near the intersection of Rosewood Drive and Bluff Road.... The Fair Association depended largely on the revenues generated by this football game." related to the agreements and stipulations associated with use of the stadium, parking, etc. during the annual Carolina-Clemson football game, including daily record in dollars of gate receipts on each day of the S.C. State Fair for 1934; and an addition to Section 5, requiring that "during Fair Week the use of the Stadium shall be subject to the control of the South Carolina State Fair Association, the Clemson College Athletic Association and the University of South Carolina Athletic Association, and that all admissions shall be through the Fair Grounds."; and an addition to Section 10: "That all actions of the Board of Trustees shall be subject to the approval of the City Council."
